Pleated Poplin

Lest you all start thinking that I have my head back in the 1800's and early 1900's of sewing historically-inspired gowns and aprons, I do sew 21st century clothing. =)

I finished this skirt this morning, using Simplicity pattern #3841.
I just love the "sewn in" pleats of this skirt, and the fun, mid to upper-calf length! It was quick and easy to put together, and the poplin fabric (thanks to a red-tag clearance sale at JoAnn's!) is very forgiving and easy to work with, not to mention wonderful to wear.

The shoes came from a grocery chain out east, and I fell in love with their old-fashioned flair! And believe it or not, the leather purse came from a thrift store! An older friend of mine out east had one of a similar fashion, and I thought that it looked a little "grown-up-ish" but not to much for a young woman going on 25 in a couple months... =)

  1. Love it. ;) Does the skirt stand out like that or do you have a petticoat or something under it?

  2. cute! I like the pleats a lot as well. Hmmm...Simplicity patterns are 99 cents right now, I might ought to look that pattern up. As if I need another pattern...I'm a sewing pattern 'collector' and a lot of them are unused anyway!! Haha... I like the skirt though and the fabric you chose. I wonder if the Red Tag clearance is on sale...but again, I have so much in my sewing room I really don't need more. :-)

  3. Cheri,

Before I read the last of your post, I was going to comment on how the bag and shoes go VERY nicely with the style and length of your poplin. Lovely, just lovely!

  6. Sarah M.,

My back was leaning up against the brick and a slight breeze was blowing, and so in the first picture the skirt sort of sticks out in a funny way. But because of the nature of the fabric, pleats, and length, it does flare out a little bit naturally.

    Ruth Ann,

The pattern was produced in 2007, but Simplicity isn't making them anymore. I found mine on ebay.

And yes, the Red Tag fabrics are 50% off this week, and if you get coupons in the mail, they have a couple 50% off ones. I've been in JoAnn's several times this week. ::winks::

And to everyone else, thankyou. =)

  7. Cheri,

Yes, we have quite a few 50% off coupons, so we're hoping to head in today and get zippes with the coupons! And, possible a few patterns. We shall see how well I *survive* from that store - it always ends up being the death of me - haha! Thanks for letting me know about the Red Tag, I hadn't looked at the flyer very much. I'll have to check it out, I don't always find stuff but every now and then I find a great deal. :)
